The legacy of the Apcar Family
The history of Kolkata's Race Course is a reminder of colonial times. Built in 1820, it still exudes luxury and grandeur. Initially, it was a gathering place for the aristocracy, but by 1880, it had opened its doors to people from all over the city and country. It is said that the building was originally the home of the prominent Armenian Apcar Family, an important merchant family who had immigrated from Persia during the 1770s. This explains the venue's Palladian-style architecture, marble floors, and teakwood doors that exude wealth and prosperity. During the Derby Season, from July to September and November to March, equestrian enthusiasts come from all over, turning Kolkata into a hub of horse racing excitement. Even in the off-season, the club hosts thrilling polo matches, maintaining its allure throughout the year.
