Preserving the passion of a legend

Rabindra Sadan is nestled in the busiest street of Kolkata Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Road. Started in 1961, it is the oldest cultural hub of India. It was built to commemorate the contribution of Rabindra Nath Tagore – an exemplary writer, poet, painter and a Nobel Prize winner. It is a cultural hub, that is embraced with verdant gardens while also being decorated with architectural marvels. This convention centre comes alive with theatrical performances, musical concerts, dance recitals, and literary gatherings. It’s a place that breeds nostalgia as well as motivates people to showcase their artistic prowess.

Celebrating a real-life prodigy

Years ago, Rabindra Sadan sparked to life when Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru inaugurated the center. Today it is the core of important festivals like the Kolkata Film Festival. It began as a small single stage auditorium but today it has flourished into a multi-theatre cultural complex centre with various other theatres and stages.

The campus embraces the Nandan theatre which is focussed on screening films and is also a cultural centre that raises awareness towards cinema. You will find young, old, the intellectuals and the literati making a beeline for Nandan to soak in the lilting air of cultural knowledge. This artistic hub of Kolkata also screens special programmes and memorial lectures along with the Social Communication Film Festival which is organised in collaboration with Roopkala Kendra. The foundation stone was laid by Chief Minister, Jyoti Basu in 1980 while it was inaugurated by the famed and respected film director Satyajit Ray on 2nd September 1985.

The Paschimbanga Bangla Akademi was founded in 1986. It was motivated by the vision to propagate Bengali culture and language in the state. The academy is modelled after Bangla Academy of Bangladesh and Académie française of France. Lastly Sisir Mancha which is also in Rabindra Sadan is a place for theatres. It came to life in 1978 and is named after famous Bengali drama personality, Sisir Kumar Bhaduri.
