Mother-House

Home of Mother Teresa

From 1953 to 1997, Mother Teresa lived in a modest room on the first floor of Mother House. Within this humble space she only needed her bed, workstation (desk and bench), thorn wreath and cross as personal belongings. Today this room stands as a poignant reminder of Mother Teresa's devotion and simplicity.

Not just a home, a lot more

Mother House serves a higher purpose. Not just a home, it stands as the headquarters of Saint Teresa of Kolkata's Missionaries of Charity religious congregation, or Mother House as it was known back then, a Catholic religious order founded by her. Saint Teresa became an influential humanitarian figure of the 20th century by creating The Charity or Mother House along with 12 pupils on October 7th 1950 and their mission was to provide care and assistance to abandoned, homeless, hungry, disabled children and adults who couldn't help themselves.

A peek into the Mother’s life

Mother Teresa's personal belongings provide visitors with an exclusive glimpse into her life at "Mother Teresa's Life, Spirit and Message Museum." You will find valuable items such as her sari, crucifix, rosary beads and worn sandals; handwritten letters from Mother Teresa as well as spiritual exhortation books to gain more insight into her profound wisdom and unwavering faith.

Unwavering devotion

At Mother House, devotion resounds through daily masses held in the Main Chapel at 6:00 AM. Sisters and volunteers of Mother House join together each morning for this holy service that fosters community spirit and shared purpose. Furthermore, pilgrim group masses at Mother Teresa's tomb led by priests are often organised. To attend these special masses and ensure an unforgettable experience it is imperative that notice be provided prior to attending one.

Every Friday at Mother House's tomb is held an emotional mass for those seeking solace, offering prayers to address petitions placed in a box nearby and concluding with an honouring of Mother or St Teresa relics or artefacts - the masses provide respite for visitors seeking solace as well as allow time for reflection in its peaceful surroundings.

An unmissable experience

Make this incredible legacy yours by visiting Mother House in Kolkata and experience its legacy first-hand, including Mother Teresa and her Missionaries of Charity's unparalleled compassion and unwavering dedication, which have changed countless lives around the globe.
