Durpin Monastery (Zang Dhok Palri Phodang)
Upon stepping into Zang Dhok Palri Phodang, also referred to as Durpin Monastery or Lava Monastery, an overwhelming serenity envelops you. Inaugurated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 1976, this preeminent monastery of Kalimpong is the guardian of the invaluable Kangyur texts, spanning 108 volumes, a treasure transported from Tibet. The monastery stands out not just for its grandeur and intricate designs but also for its unique three-dimensional architecture and captivating murals. Situated at an altitude of 1372 m atop Durpin Hill, Zang Dhok Palri Phodang also offers mesmerizing vistas of the town below, intertwined with the lush biodiversity of the encompassing woods. On a cloudless day, one can also bask in the magnificent sight of Mt. Kanchenjunga.
