A lavish mansion like no other

Undoubtedly labeled as the best, Morgan House is good evidence of why people adore ancient British Colonial Architecture. This architectural excellence of Kalimpong’s town was built somewhere in the 1930s by Mr. George Morgan. The magnificent mansion sits peacefully on an estate stretching sixteen acres wide. Nevertheless, what adds to the mansion’s beauty is its aesthetic natural surroundings. It is built atop the mountain ranges of Durpindara.

Early mornings and late evenings here are quite beautiful and heart-chilling for all those who love to be in the cozy comfort of Mother Nature. Standing atop the mansion's hill, one can witness the whitish blue skyline greeting the lush green blanket of Mother Nature. It is nothing less than a pure bliss to the eyes of a lone wanderer.

Once a place for gatherings and galas

The building's origins are in a celebratory gesture. Morgan House was established when a jute baron and an owner of an indigo plantation got married. Over time, the property would serve as a summer getaway and became the venue for lavish gatherings and galas. Trustees would be in charge of the house's transfer if the Morgans died without leaving an heir. The government would take possession of the house once India gained its independence in 1947.

There is also a coincidental relationship between Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's Morgan House and the night of India's freedom. When Pandit Nehru, the country's first prime minister, fell unwell in 1962, Morgan House stepped up to serve as the official residence of the government. The abrupt death of Pandit Nehru would alter the destiny of the property. The residence was turned over to the tourism department in 1965, but it wasn't until 1975 that it became the property of the carers who still occupy there. It has been open to tourists ever since and is run like a boutique hotel.

Of gabled roofs and stone-carved beauty

The stone-carved mansion with ancient glass windows, gabled roofs, and towering chimneys marks this mansion as one of the testaments to the architectural grandeur of the colonial period. India has plenty of hill stations or towns with mysterious houses, which people usually avoid after nightfall. Yet, they have the prowess of attracting filmmakers. One such wonder is the Morgan House. It is a perfect place for cooking Bollywood’s spooky tales. There is a lounge area where one can find several appreciations of the house as a testimony of time for its Bollywood appearance.

Amidst the lush green hills of the Durpin Dara ranges, the Morgan House overlooks the majesty of the mighty ranges of Kanchenjunga. Rising to the call of Mother Nature and birds singing in their melodious tone is all that one aspires for to find a rescue from the city’s hustle. Nature lovers and photographers have plenty of scope to invest their efforts in clicking some jaw-dropping moments of nature’s unparalleled beauty here. Tourists visiting here never fail to take a nature trail around the estates to calm their excited nerves with the overwhelming life struggles.
