The perfect brew of the Himalayas

Often regarded as the gateway to North-East India and the Himalayas, Bagdogra is a charming hill station in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal. This unassuming town is renowned for its lush tea estates, with verdant plantations stretching as far as the eye can see, producing some of the finest Darjeeling tea.

Each tea estate in Bagdogra has a story etched into its terraced slopes. The Castleton Tea Estate, with its colonial bungalow, whispers secrets of bygone eras. The Ambootia Tea Estate, nestled amidst rhododendron forests, invites visitors to sip tea while gazing at the distant peaks. And then there’s the Margaret’s Hope Tea Estate, where legends of lost love and hope intertwine with every cup brewed.

Gateway to adventure

Bagdogra serves as a launching pad for trekkers, mountaineers, and nature enthusiasts heading to the Himalayas and Sikkim. Darjeeling, Sandakphu, and Phalut treks begin from here. The Singalila Ridge Trek traverses through rhododendron forests, offing glimpses of the world’s highest peaks, and camping sites under star-studded skies.

Aspiring mountaineers often start their journey from Bagdogra. Kangchenjunga, the third-highest peak globally, is accessible from here.

Mahananda delights

The Mahananda River meanders through the town, providing serene spots for picnics and leisurely walks. Its gentle flow invites introspection. For a more adrenaline-laden activity, embark on a jungle safari at the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, to spot leopards, barking deer, and various avian species. The sanctuary’s dense forests promise adventure.

A royal commemoration

The Coronation Bridge, also known as the Sevoke Roadway Bridge, spans the Teesta River, connecting the districts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong. The bridge was named to commemorate the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937 but locals affectionately call it “Baghpool”, which means “tiger bridge” due to the two tiger statues at one entrance.

Bagdogra, with its tea-scented air, mountain vistas, and tranquil rivers, beckons travellers seeking solace and adventure. Whether you’re sipping a cup of Darjeeling tea or gazing at the Himalayan peaks, this unpretentious town leaves an indelible mark: it’s not just a place; it’s an experience waiting to unfold.
