History lives on in this mansion

The hill town of Mussoorie boasts of many attractions. The George Everest House is one that you should definitely not miss. A museum that used to be the home of Sir George Everest who distinguished himself as the Surveyor General of India in the 1930’s and oversaw the accurate measurement. He completed the mammoth task of accurately measuring the world’s tallest peak. The peak previously known as peak XV was famously renamed Mount Everest in his honour.

Perched on top of a cliff, the house overlooks the tranquil and beautiful Mussoorie valley. Built in 1832, George Everest’s House exudes an air of serenity and nostalgia from a bygone era. The surrounding views are spectacular, with the scenic Doon Valley on one side, the river valley Aglar on the other, and majestic Himalayan peaks to the north. It's no wonder that the house is a draw for history buffs as well as nature enthusiasts.

A much sought after picnic spot

Sir George Everest lived in this house for eleven years. It served as his home, observatory, and laboratory, and was also known as the Park Estate. The George Everest House and George Everest Peak nearby are popular sites for camping, picnics, and adventure outings. You can find stalls selling maggi noodles and momos at the base of the climb, or you can bring your own food and drinks to enjoy a picnic in the scenic outdoors.

Beyond George Everest House

Apart from the ever-popular bustling Mall Road, Mussoorie boasts a number of majestic waterfalls. Be sure to visit Kempty Falls, Bhatta Falls and Mossy Falls and take in the splendour of the waters. The Mussoorie Lake too is a draw. The Landour Clock Tower and Christ Church are major tourist attractions as is Gun Hill Point which takes its name from a canon that was placed atop it during the British Raj and which used to be fired in the afternoon so that the people knew what time of the day it was. This second tallest peak offers a panoramic view of the snow-covered ranges of the mighty Himalayas as well as the town and Doon Valley.
