The enchanting cascade

"It seemed like nature's way of smiling. Thousands of tiny rainbows danced joyfully as the water burst into liquid ribbons and then scattered into infinite pearls of laughter over the divine rocks."

This poetic quote by the renowned author Ruskin Bond, who spent many years in Mussoorie, perfectly captures the magic and splendour of Kempty Falls.

Kempty Falls is a short and scenic drive from the quaint hill station of Mussoorie. As you wind through the hills, the road suddenly opens up to a dramatic vista - a thundering curtain of frothy white water cascading down rocky cliffs into a pristine pool below.

The falls originate from a river high up in the mountains and tumble down from an impressive height of around 40 feet. Standing at the base, you can feel the mist and spray on your face as the water crashes into the pool with breathtaking force. The sights and sounds are both exhilarating and soothing all at the same time. The waterfall is surrounded by a lush green valley of towering Deodars, vibrant rhododendrons and ferns that coat the forest floor. Well-laid-out trails wind through this little green haven, inviting you to explore. Stone steps lead right up to the edge of the cliffside pool, where the adventurous can indulge in a dip in the refreshing water.

A relaxing retreat

For those who want to give the dip a miss, just finding a quiet rock to lounge on and admire the natural grandeur is bliss enough. The falls also provide facilities for rock climbing, rappelling, and river crossing under expert guidance. For a closer connection with nature, visitors can pitch a tent at designated camps and spend a night under the starry skies.

As night falls, the area becomes magical, with bonfires and music adding to the allure. Ending the day with hot chai and enjoying the splendour of Kempty Falls is a perfect way to conclude the visit.
