Where courage is etched in stone
The Khalanga War Memorial, fondly called Kalinga or Kalinga War Memorial, commemorates the extraordinary bravery of the Gorkha soldiers during the Anglo-Nepalese War of 1814. In the Battle of Nalapani, near Dehradun, only 600 Gorkhas valiantly defended the Khalanga Fort against an overwhelming force of 3,000 British soldiers. They endured unimaginable hardships for six gruelling weeks, defending the fort without food or water. Their unwavering courage and resilience left a lasting impression on the British, who erected the Khalanga War Memorial as a tribute to their fallen adversaries.
This historic monument, now under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), is a testament to the Gorkhas' indomitable spirit. Explore the memorial and pay homage to these brave warriors whose sacrifice continues to inspire generations. Every November, a vibrant mela is held to celebrate the Gorkhas' bravery and rich culture.
