Tracing the roots of the institute

Run by the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education, the Forest Research Institute (FRI) is a premier institute in India. Established in 1906 as the Imperial Forest Research Institute, it was renamed after Independence and has remained influential in the field. The sprawling 450-hectare campus is set in the foothills of the Himalayas. It is a training ground for forest officers and rangers, and features a main building with Colonial Greco-Roman elements. The institute houses labs, a herbarium, a library, arboreta, a printing press, and an experimental field for forestry work.

FRI teaches and encourage the rejuvenation of India's forests. It reveals its true potential through the depths of its academic and conservation pursuits. You will find facilities, from lecture halls where the sciences of silviculture are discussed to state-of-the-art laboratories that find answers to the intricacies of forest ecology.

Architectural finesse and serenity

An architectural masterpiece, with the Tons River forming its western boundary, the complex emerges as a structure so monumental in scale that it claims to be one of the largest purely brick structures in the world.

Conceived by the visionary architect C.G. Blomfield, it spans nearly a thousand feet. Its red brick facades are sculpted in absolute symmetry, and its six courtyards are encircled by vaulted corridors with beautiful archways. The campus has rolling lawns and well maintained gardens.

Abode of history and museums

FRI hosts several well equipped museums that offer a glimpse into the world of forestry and its rich history. The Legume Heritage Museum showcases an impressive collection of over 17,000 legume specimens, providing an insight into the diversity and importance of this plant family.

The Wood Museum, on the other hand, takes you on a journey through the marvels of timber and its various applications. With extensive exhibits of wood samples from around the world, this museum educates you about different wood types, their properties, and traditional uses by indigenous communities.

Additionally, the Pathology Museum offers a glimpse into the world of plant diseases and the research efforts to combat them. Through interactive exhibits and informative panels, you can gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced in protecting forests.

Over a dozen films, songs, and TV commercials have been shot in the grounds of FRI.
