Travel back to the time of Lord Buddha

Step into the sacred ground of Sarnath where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon. In the heart of this holy land stands the Sarnath Museum which will take you on an unforgettable voyage through time with its majestic treasure trove of antiquities showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Buddhism.

Listen to the echoes of ancient tales in this oldest site museum of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Discover the preserved relics and artefacts from the 3rd century BC to the 12th century AD that had been unearthed painstakingly by ASI.

The architectural layout of the museum was crafted to mirror the design of a Sangharam or a monastery, given that most of the findings originate from Buddhist monasteries. Stroll along its hallways and marvel at its stunning assortment of sculptures, edifices, artefacts, and images – an ensemble that beckons the curious souls of all ages.

Take a tour for handcrafted artefacts

Upon entering the museum, discover five galleries, meticulously filled with artefacts from different periods. Step into the northernmost gallery, Tathagata, and revel in the aura of sublimity while admiring the various images of Buddha. Enjoy the ethereal beauty of the Triratna gallery where you’ll discover several images of Buddhist deities and some associated objects.

As you explore the halls of Trimurti, you will come across magnificent displays of a Yaksha figure, images of Trimurti (Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Mahesh), Surya, Saraswati, Mahishasur Mardini, amongst others. In the southernmost gallery, Ashutosh (Shiva), invites you to explore the exhibits of Brahmanical deities in different forms, Vishnu, Ganesh, Kartikeya, Agni, Parvati, Navagrahas, Bhairava, and a colossal Andhakasuravadha.

Experience the grand sight of India’s national emblem

As you venture into Shakyasimha gallery, it is enchanting to see the most prized collections of the museum. Here, the illustrious Lion Capital of Ashoka stands with its awe-inspiring craftsmanship as an unparalleled testament to the grandeur of India’s past. To the left is the ethereal presence of the inscribed colossal standing images of Bodhisattva in red sandstone dedicated by Bhikshu Bala, along with an octagonal shaft, and an umbrella.

Step away from the galleries and the Vastumandana and Shilparatna verandahs beckon you to witness the beautiful artistry that adorns their spaces - lintels, door jambs, face stones, and especially a large lintel depicting the story of Shantivadina Jataka.

Beyond the museum

Once you are done exploring the intriguing Sarnath Museum, Varanasi’s spiritual and other wonders await. Reach the ghats at the banks of the river Ganga and start with Dashashwamedh Ghat known for the beautiful spectacle of the Ganga Aarti. You can venture forth to Manikarnika Ghat, where the solemn rites of cremation unfold, symbolizing the eternal cycle of life from birth to death. Seek solace and serenity at Assi Ghat, where the gentle caress of the sacred Ganga offers an unparalleled riverside experience, inviting contemplation and reflection. Beyond the ghats, Varanasi’s magnificent temples await. Go on a journey of inner awakening and enlightenment at Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Kala Bhairava Temple, Durga Temple, or Bharat Mata Temple. Travel back in time at the Ramnagar Fort, marvel at the modern magnificence of New Vishwanath Temple, or revel in the artistic splendour of Bharat Kala Bhavan. There is so much to be discovered, one trip will not feel enough!

Every corner of the Sarnath Museum unfolds the profound legacy of a bygone era. Make sure to put Sarnath Museum on your itinerary when you visit Varanasi and discover a sanctuary where history doesn't merely reside but comes alive at every step.
