A grand monument commemorating the spark of Buddhism

Welcome to Sarnath, a realm steeped in the grandeur of history that unfolds in the shadow of the magnificent Dhamek Stupa. Built in 500 CE, this 141-foot-tall stupa was made to replace an earlier structure commissioned by the illustrious Mauryan king, Ashoka, in 249 BCE.

This is the historic place that witnessed a momentous occasion in Buddhism called the ‘Dharma Chakra Pravartana’. Buddha, having attained enlightenment, is said to have delivered his first sermon here, to his disciples. This is where the "Eightfold Path" unfolded, thus making this place one of the most sacred places for Buddhists. This site is also where the first 'Sangh' was founded, which included Lord Buddha and about 60 monks.

Mysteries of the Dhamek Stupa

When you are there, don't overlook the quaint museum at the entrance, where fascinating tales of this stupa await discovery. While the monument's history may be lost in time, a significant find emerged in the 1830s: a stone tablet unearthed by a British archaeologist within the stupa, bearing inscriptions that revealed the site's name 'Dhamek' and its profound significance.
