A tribute to fallen colonial soldiers

In the historic city of Kanpur, stands the Kanpur Memorial Church, a somber reminder of a tumultuous period in India’s past. Known also as the All Soul’s Cathedral, this Gothic structure was erected to commemorate the British troops who perished during the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857.

Built in the Lombardy Gothic style of architecture, this massive red-coloured church is the brainchild of the visionary architect Walter Granville. As you cross the threshold of this church, you will find every corner whispering tales of the human cost of freedom.

As shafts of sunlight filter through stained glass windows, casting a kaleidoscope of colours upon the sacred space, you cannot help but feel a sense of reverence and solemnity wash over you.

Let’s step into the church to discover the tales from Kanpur’s chaotic colonial past.

A testament to architectural excellence

Standing as a sentinel of history, this architectural marvel is flanked by a somber cemetery, the graves bearing witness to the siege of Cawnpore.

Within this space lies the heart of the church – a magnificent sculpture known as the 'Angel of Resurrection'. Crafted by the skilled hands of Baron Carlo Marochetti, the favoured sculptor of Queen Victoria herself, this ethereal figure stands as a beacon of hope and remembrance for generations to come.

With palm branches held aloft in solemn reverence and eyes closed in quiet contemplation, the Angel of Resurrection exudes an aura of tranquil serenity, her crossed arms a symbol of eternal peace.

Venture to the church's east corner and you will discover a serene memorial garden with an intricately carved Gothic screen.
