A ghat of legends

Welcome to the Brahmavart Ghat, a revered riverfront in the Bithoor town of Kanpur district. Located on the banks of the sacred river Ganga, its gentle ripples weave tales of spirituality.

It is believed that this ghat is where Lord Brahma began the creation of humankind, sculpting it from clay and imbuing it with righteousness. Lord Brahma is said to have lived here and installed a Shiva Linga that is presently worshipped as Brahmeshwar Mahadeva. On the steps of the ghat, you will also find a horseshoe nail believed to have fallen off Lord Brahma's horse during their journey to the Ashvamedha Yajna. To honour this sacred connection, a small temple dedicated to Lord Brahma stands proudly on the ghat.

Brahmavart Ghat isn't just a holy place; it's a gateway to the soul, where seekers have come for generations to find solace, wisdom, and inner peace. That's why, when you visit, you may come across devotees from far and wide offering their prayers after partaking in a ritual bath in the holy waters of the Ganga.

As twilight descends, the ghat transforms into a place of mesmerising beauty. Embark on a boat cruise on the Ganga, gently gliding past the ghat and soaking in the ethereal glow of the setting sun.

The buzz of Bithoor

You can visit the Brahmavart Ghat all year round, but for an unforgettable experience, spend time at the fairs and festivals that the town of Bithoor hosts. Each adds its unique charm to the spiritual ambience. There's the revered Kartik Poornima (November-December), the Maghi Poornima (January-February), and the joyous celebrations of Makar Sankranti (January), to name a few. There's also the Bithoor Mahotsav, inaugurated with the Ganga Aarti at Brahmavart Ghat.

Apart from that, Kanpur also hosts Ganga Mela (an extension of Holi), which has a fascinating story behind it. Local lore recounts how, in 1942, Kanpur residents played with colours and raised the tricolour flag to protest the British ban on Holi celebrations. Since then, this festival has been commemorated annually in honour of this historic act of resistance.

Plan your trip to Kanpur during the celebrations of Ganga Mela or Bithoor Mahotsav to experience the culture of India's heartland at its best.

A revered ashram awaits

Venture beyond the sacred shores of Brahmavart Ghat and delve into the heart of the epic Ramayana at Valmiki Ashram. It's believed to be the very place where Maharishi Valmiki, the revered sage and chronicler, penned the epic Ramayana. This tranquil sanctuary is also said to have offered refuge to Sita during her exile, where she gave birth to the twins, Lav and Kush. Here, amid the serenity of the ashram, they spent their childhood years under the tutelage of the great sage, learning the art of governance, warfare, and statesmanship. The Ramayana even recounts the captivating events that unfolded within these grounds, where the valiant Lav and Kush outsmarted the mighty Lord Hanuman, ultimately leading to a reunion with their father, Lord Rama.
