A citadel of rebellions

Spanning a vast expanse of 15 acres, the grand fortress commands attention with its dimensions of 312 meters in length and 225 meters in width. The fort was crafted from solid granite, and its walls boast a thickness ranging from 16 to 20 feet, ensuring its resilience through the ages. Built upon the rugged terrain of Bangra Hill by the visionary Raja Bir Singh Ju Deo of Orchha, the fort draws countless tourists and history enthusiasts to its storied gates each year.

The gates that fanned the flames of freedom

It’s 1857, and the First War of Independence is underway. In Jhansi, the Fort has become one of the most important centres of resistance against the British. The brave queen of Jhansi, Rani Lakshmibai, is about to be arrested by the British forces. Still, instead of surrendering, she pulls off a daring escape through the Bhanderi Gate, evading capture and igniting the flames of freedom.

Fast forward to today, within the formidable walls of Jhansi Fort, one can find not only the legendary Bhanderi Gate but also nine other gates that provide access to the fort. Each of these ten majestic gates is steeped in legend and lore, bearing names such as Khandero Gate, Datia Darwaza, Unnao Gate, Jharna Gate, Laxmi Gate, Sagar Gate, Orcha Gate, Sainyar Gate, and Chand Gate.
