A tale of legacy and devotion

Welcome to the historic city of Jhansi, where every cobblestoned street whispers tales of the valour and resilience of Rani Lakshmibai, the revolutionary queen. In the ancient streets and vibrant markets of this storied city, right at the entrance of Jhansi Fort, lies the Ganesh Temple, which was built in honour of Lord Ganesh, the remover of obstacles.

Unlike any other temple, Ganesh Temple boasts a unique dome-like structure, a marvel of architectural ingenuity that stands as a testament to the enduring bond between man and the divine. Within its hallowed confines, behold the resplendent marble idol of Lord Ganesh, his divine countenance radiating with grace and wisdom that transcends time itself.

Step into this temple and be transported back to the year 1842, where Raja Gangadharrao and Manikarnika Tambe exchanged vows in a union blessed by the divine. It was here, amidst the sacred rites and solemn rituals, that Manikarnika Tambe was anointed with the name 'Rani Lakshmibai,' a name that would echo through the annals of history as a beacon of courage and defiance against colonial oppression.

Intriguing origins

Dating back to the hazy mists of history, to 1760 CE, the question of its creator remains veiled in intrigue, beckoning you to delve deeper into its storied past.

The only clues exist in the tales of two noble figures - Vishwas Rao Lakshman, the esteemed Subedar of Jhansi under the Maratha Peshwas from 1766 to 1769 CE, and his illustrious successor, Raghunathrao Newalkar, progenitor of the esteemed Newalkar dynasty. Some say it was the deft hands of Vishwas Rao Lakshman that fashioned this divine abode, while others contend that it was Raghunathrao Newalkar who laid the foundation stones of this sacred edifice.

Yet, amidst the echoes of history and the shifting sands of time, one thing remains certain—the legacy of Ganesh Temple, which reflects the enduring faith and reverence of generations past even today.

Visit Ganesh Temple at its most incredible

Legend has it that even the mighty Rani Lakshmibai used to seek solace and strength from Lord Ganesha at this very temple. To witness the temple in all its magnificence, plan your visit during the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, which typically falls in August or September. Even before the time of Rani Lakshmibai, this auspicious festival has been celebrated with unparalleled fervour in Ganesh Temple, marking the sacred bond between the people of Jhansi and their beloved deity. Such is the significance of Lord Ganesha that even today you will find locals praying to Lord Ganesha in this temple before welcoming his statue into their homes.
