The holy dip that cleanses mortal sins
At the heart of Ram Ki Paidi's sanctity lies a timeless legend that has drawn the devout to these hallowed ghats for centuries. It is believed that Lord Ram's younger brother Lakshman once wished to go on a pilgrimage. Standing on the banks of the Sarayu River at this very spot, Lord Rama advised Lakshmana that any devotee who takes a holy dip in the Sarayu River before sunrise will receive the same holy blessings as if they had taken a bath at all the sacred pilgrimage sites.
According to this legend, bathing in the Sarayu River before dawn is equivalent to bathing at every revered tirth (Hindu pilgrimage). This is why devotees come to Ram Ki Paidi to take a pre-dawn dip in the sacred Sarayu waters, as it is believed to fulfil all their wishes and cleanse them of sins, just as Rama had promised Lakshmana centuries ago.
Dive into the luminous embrace
Imagine yourself on the banks of the Sarayu River in Ayodhya; as night falls, thousands of flickering flames begin to dance on the serene river water. This dreamy view occurs on Deepotsav at Ram Ki Paidi, creating a mesmerising spectacle that transforms the holy city into a luminous wonderland. You can witness this celebration around Diwali (October-November) when Ram Ki Paidi comes alive with thousands of diyas (traditional clay lamps), bathing the revered ancient site in their warm glow. Deepotsav means the festival of lights, celebrating the triumph of good over evil and Lord Ram's homecoming after defeating Ravana, the demon king of Lanka.
As you lose yourself in the mesmerising play of light and shadow, feel the festival's magic ignite your soul. Ram Ki Paidi also made its way into the Guinness Book of World Records for a record 22 lakh diyas illuminating the ghats on Deepotsav.
Plan your trip to Ayodhya during the festival of Diwali, and let the divine light of these earthen lamps guide you on an unforgettable journey through India's heartland.
