The fragrant mausoleum

Gulab Bari, meaning the “Garden of Roses,” is a captivating monument in the historic city of Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, India. This exquisite tomb, commissioned by Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula himself during his lifetime, stands as a testament to the Nawabi architectural brilliance. It is surrounded by a lush green garden adorned with a variety of roses, which were the Nawab’s favourite flowers.

National importance

The tomb and garden

The central chamber houses the cenotaphs of Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula and his mother. The tomb stands in the center of a Charbagh Garden, complete with fountains and shallow water channels.

Imposing gateway

The tomb is approached through an imposing gateway. Its square double-storeyed structure features arched verandahs on each side. The upper storey boasts a three-arched façade adorned with minarets at the corners.

Dome and finial

The dome of the central chamber is crowned by an inverted lotus and a metal finial, adding elegance to the mausoleum.

Enclosure wall

The monument is surrounded by an enclosure wall made of Lakhauri bricks, lime-plastered, and adorned with plaster mouldings. Within this enclosure, you’ll find the mosque Imambara, Shahi Hammam, Baradari, and a well.

Gulab Bari is not merely a tourist spot; it is a place of worship and cultural events. Locals, especially from the Muslim community, consider it holy. The monument’s connection to a boali (stepwell) in Lucknow adds to its mystique.
