Once an example of Thorean architecture, Warangal Fort was home to 45 majestic pillars adorned with intricate carvings reminiscent of Thorean tradition. Of particular note was its iconic "Gateway of Glory", constructed with four elaborately carved pillars hewn from one rock face; rising approximately 30 feet high they remain captivating today; known locally as Kirti Toranas they represent South Indian architectural excellence.

While exploring the fort, you'll come across remnants of Swayambhudevi Alayam temple built by Qutub Shahi Kings after they took control of Warangal Fort. But the most captivating attraction within is Swayambhu Devalayam - a mediaeval masterpiece dedicated to Lord Shiva built in 1162 AD which stands as its focal point surrounded by breathtaking sculptures. Furthermore, Shambhulingeshwara Temple lies opposite the Open Air Museum housing an immense Nandi statue facing its Shiva counterpart!
Warangal Fort is protected by three concentric circular walls that create an effective defence system against invaders. The first was constructed during Rudrama Devi's rule and boasts an impressive diameter of about 2.4 km; another layer with 150-feet wide walls adds extra defences against intruders. Warangal's entire township is believed to be intricately carved out from one rock face, displaying the incredible engineering prowess of Kakatiya architects.
