An expanse of blue in a sea of green

Imagine walking through a lush green haven that opens up to a beautiful serene lake. And while you trek through this picturesque landscape, you will marvel at the fact that the beautiful lake you see is about 8 centuries old, the trees around you much older.

This is the experience of walking through the Pakhal Wildlife Sanctuary that houses the Pakhal Lake. Spread over an area of about 839 square kilometres about 50 km away from the hub of Warangal, this green haven is the perfect site for nature enthusiasts, bird watchers and families on a picnic. You will find a wide range of diverse flora and fauna here along with a wide range of migratory birds.

The Pakhal Lake was excavated on the orders of King Ganapati Deva of the Kakatiya empire in 1213 AD. Originally designed as the main source of water for irrigation in the area, the lake was made along the Krishna River.

An abode of rich flora and fauna

Pakhal Wildlife Sanctuary became one of the most popular sites for both tourists and locals because of its rich wealth of animal, plant and avian species. Here, you will have multiple opportunities to witness an abundance of animals roaming freely in their natural environment. Sightings of tigers, leopards, bears and herds of deer are quite frequent. Other intriguing species include hyenas, wolves, wild dogs, jackals, sloth bears, nilgai, porcupines and panthers. The most commonly found reptiles here include pythons, cobras, common kraits, monitor lizards and crocodiles.

If you appreciate the beauty and complexity of plants and trees, you will find that the majority of flora in the region is deciduous. You will also find a few evergreen species in the region. If all you see is a sea of green, you will find that pretty mesmerising too. And like the people you see there, you will find that several species of migratory birds also flock to the sanctuary regularly. The best time to visit and find the most beautiful birds is between November and March.
