Shaping Silver

In Karimnagar, Telangana, a tradition of crafting filigrees dates back to ancient times. Karimnagar's silver filigrees are the signature craft in the region, and thus named aptly. These intricately woven pieces are indeed spectacular. This craft has evolved over the centuries and continues to survive the test of time. The silver filigree craft of Karimnagar was awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2007.

Transforming Silver into Motifs

Historians believe that this craft garnered popularity during the 19th and 20th century. Traditionally, the Karimnagar craftsmen twist silver wires to make jaalis (trellis). Although the craft did not originate there, Karimnagar has been the epicentre of this craft for the past two centuries. The credit for introducing this craft to the region is often given to a well-travelled goldsmith, Kadarla Ramayya, who hailed from Yalagandala (Elgandal, Telangana).

The process involves melting pure silver metal and subsequently moulding it into the desired shapes. Artisans use an automated drawing machine to give shape to silver metal and transform it into thick wires. With the use of silver wires of varying thickness, an intricate and beautiful pattern is created as per the required structure. The process involves heating and then allowing metal to  cool down in the desired shape and size. Once the individual components are ready, the artisans carefully solder all the pieces together to finalize the product. With skill and dexterity, these artisans embed complex designs and motifs into these artefacts. Artisans draw inspiration from birds, flowers, geometric patterns, and even musical instruments for designing exquisite pieces.
