A Collaborative Endeavor
Although scroll paintings have a significant presence in the Asian artistic tradition, Cheriyal scroll paintings have a distinct allure. Artisans have been producing these beautiful pieces of art since the 17th century, and the primary contributors to this art form are the non-dominant caste communities in Telangana. Many of the narratives depicted in these scroll paintings comprise folk tales popular in the region. Cheriyal paintings are a hallmark of storytelling through art. The narratives are often rooted in cultural contexts or inspired by mythology, such as the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, the Hindu epics.
Historically, artists have used natural pigments and handmade tools to bring life to these depictions, using Khadi cloth as their canvas. The products available for purchase now, however, are produced using synthetic colours on materials such as plywood and paper. Narrators and artisans collaborate on these magnificent art pieces to create a inimitable paintings that are timeless.
Traditionally, after producing Cheriyal paintings, narrators would travel between towns and regions to perform the scenes depicted in them. Musicians and other performers accompanied them with props like puppets, masks, and various musical instruments. These performances were quite popular, and communities would commission the artists and performers to host cultural events. If one were to find oneself amid such an event, one would be seated next to audience belonging to traditional community sect hailing from nearby regions.
A Wall of Narratives
Due to the growing prominence of digital media, such as cinema, television, and the internet, these Cheriyal-inspired cultural functions no longer exist. Although we can no longer witness these captivating theatrical performances, we can still find their essence and the artworks available in the market. The artisans have adapted to the evolving nature of the cultural experience by producing smaller-sized scrolls that depict a singular scene or two instead of entire narratives. These individual scenes are available as wall hangings that elevate any environment they are placed in. A combination of a few of these paintings can create a beautiful wall of narratives that transcend the individuality of these artworks. Artisans also manufacture masks, dolls, and keychains inspired by the Cheriyal art form.
