An astounding manifestation of divinity

Amid the chanting of a thousand sacred hymns lies a world of enchanting beauty, telling stories of dynasties, historic triumphs, and timeless traditions. In Thanjavur, a city full of temples older than 1000 years, the Brihadisvara Temple is an epoch in itself.

A testament to the Dravidian architecture of the Chola period, the Brihadeeswara Temple, also known as Peruvudaiyar Kovil, is one of the largest and most magnificent temples in India. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, represented by a colossal 'Lingam,' this awe-inspiring temple was built around 1010 AD by the visionary Chola king Rajaraja Chola I.

It is revered as one of the three 'Great Living Chola Temples,' alongside the Gangaikondacholeeswaram Temple and Airavatesvara Temple, and is a proud UNESCO World Heritage Site.

One of the temple's most captivating features is the grand statue of Nandi, the sacred bull of Lord Shiva. At a towering 13 feet high and 16 feet wide, this magnificent statue is carved from a single rock, embodying the temple's majestic spirit and artistic brilliance.

Architecture that captures the history of Thanjavur

The Brihadisvara Temple is a powerful symbol of the Chola dynasty's might and glory. Remarkably, the massive temple complex was built in just 7 years, a monumental feat given the scale of the sculptures, art, and the complex itself.

The temple's inner precincts are surrounded by cloisters and its outer perimeter by heavy brick walls. It features a Nandi Shrine, two expansive Mandapas (worship halls), an Antarala (antechamber), and a towering Vimana. You'll also find ornate and grand Gopurams (temple gateways) from a bygone era, serving as the sole entrances to the temple grounds.

The temple's inscriptions and frescoes vividly recount the fortunes of the city, from its ascension to its decline. The Shiva lingam, enveloped by the tower, is crafted from stones expertly bonded without mortar. Another awe-inspiring sight is the massive stone at its peak that weighs nearly 80 tons.
