Architecture that captures the history of Thanjavur
The Brihadisvara Temple is a powerful symbol of the Chola dynasty's might and glory. Remarkably, the massive temple complex was built in just 7 years, a monumental feat given the scale of the sculptures, art, and the complex itself.
The temple's inner precincts are surrounded by cloisters and its outer perimeter by heavy brick walls. It features a Nandi Shrine, two expansive Mandapas (worship halls), an Antarala (antechamber), and a towering Vimana. You'll also find ornate and grand Gopurams (temple gateways) from a bygone era, serving as the sole entrances to the temple grounds.
The temple's inscriptions and frescoes vividly recount the fortunes of the city, from its ascension to its decline. The Shiva lingam, enveloped by the tower, is crafted from stones expertly bonded without mortar. Another awe-inspiring sight is the massive stone at its peak that weighs nearly 80 tons.
