Discover nature's splendour

Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary lies just 30 minutes outside Mamallapuram in Chengalpattu district. It attracts travellers looking to immerse themselves in nature's peaceful embrace. A popular destination among birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike, Vedanthangal Sanctuary draws in over 12,000 migrating birds each year! It is amazing to see the sky full of vibrant feathered guests including open-billed storks, graceful egrets, majestic pelicans and other fascinating avian species. Add in the lush greenery and local wildlife, and there is Vedanthangal, an unforgettable destination.

Explore the diverse ecosystem that thrives within this sanctuary. It is home to over 115 bird species such as the garganey teals, shovelers, pintails, stilts and sandpipers and herons along with mammals such as jackals, jungle cats, wild boar and black-nape hares! Amidst such biodiversity lies picturesque barringtonia trees which serve as nesting grounds for these feathered wonders. Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is nature at its best!

A diverse avian world

Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary boasts over two and a half centuries of history within its lush 74 acres of landscape. This remarkable sanctuary owes its fertility to local communities who first recognised water mixed with bird droppings as a natural fertiliser; since then they have lovingly protected this oasis, creating a thriving ecosystem and stunning surroundings.

Bird flights become visible from November on, and the nesting season winds down in March. Established by the British in 1936, it has over hundreds of bird species, both resident and migratory, flocking through its sanctuary.
