Time capsule of the Travancore Kingdom

Vattakottai Fort is a historical jewel on the shores of the Arabian Sea. The granite fort has stood the test of time and is today a popular tourist attraction. If you're drawn to history, and like the seaside, Vattakottai Fort is a must-visit.

Though now a part of Tamil Nadu, Vattakottai was once ruled by the Travancore kings and was one of their important strategic areas. The fort was constructed in the 18th century during the time of King Marthanda Varma. Situated approximately 6 km to the north-east side of Kanniyakumari, the Vattakottai Fort is made of stone. The fort is spread across an area of 3.5 acres of land and has restrooms, weapon room, and watchtowers. The height of the walls is 25 ft, and the thickness in front is around 29 ft. It is said that during the earlier days, Padmanabhapuram Palace could be seen from the peak of the fort. There used to be a secret path through a tunnel that was 4 ft wide from the palace to the fort. This tunnel is closed now. The fort is constructed beautifully with plenty of open spaces and a pond in between.

The enchanting coastal citadel

The beauty of this fort that overlooks the majestic sea is a sight to behold. That is why Vattakottai Fort is a must-explore experience on your tour to Kanniyakumari. The fort stands as a silent sentinel to the history of the region. Constructed over two centuries ago, this fort echoes the strategic brilliance of the Travancore kings. As you step within its stone walls, you can almost hear the whispers of the past.

Perched on the edge of the Indian Ocean, Vattakottai Fort boasts breathtaking views of the azure waters. The fort's vantage point allowed it to guard the coastline, a testament to the ingenuity of its builders. Today, it invites tourists to witness the same panoramic views that once kept invaders at bay.

A marvel of architecture

Crafted from sturdy stone, Vattakottai Fort is a testament to the architectural prowess of its time. Its walls, 25 ft high, speak of strength, while its intricate design reflects the artistic sensibilities of the era. The open spaces within the fort and the tranquil pond at its heart create a sense of serenity amidst the historical grandeur.

The fort also harbours secrets of the past. Once, a hidden tunnel connected Vattakottai Fort to the Padmanabhapuram Palace, offering a discreet passage between the two strategic strongholds. While the tunnel may be sealed today, its existence serves as a reminder of the covert history hidden within the fort's walls.
