Exploring ancient strongholds

Udayagiri Fort, perched atop a picturesque hill, stands as a silent witness to the ebb and flow of time. This historical citadel in Tamil Nadu is unique in that it was built for the kings of Kerala by a naval commander of the Dutch East India Company. It happened because of the Battle of Colachel, fought in 1741, when the humongous Dutch East India Company was comprehensively defeated by Marthanda Varma, the king of Travancore. The Kerala king absorbed the naval commander, Eustachius De Lannoy, into his forces. You can still see De Lannoy’s grave in the fort, along with those of his wife and son.

Whether you're a history enthusiast, an admirer of ancient architecture, or someone who revels in panoramic vistas, Udayagiri Fort promises a rare experience.

Souvenirs and nearby attractions

The local markets nearby showcase traditional Tamil Nadu handicrafts, handwoven textiles, and local spices that make for memorable keepsakes. Udayagiri Fort is surrounded by natural beauty. A visit to the Padmanabhapuram Palace, an architectural marvel, or a trip to the historic Chitharal Jain Monuments will enhance your journey.
