One of the sacred 108 Shakti Peethas

The Kumari Amman Temple in Kanniyakumari is among the holiest places on Earth. The sacred dwelling place of the Virgin Goddess Devi Kanya Kumari, this temple is also one of the 108 Shakti Peethas.

This temple's historical and religious significance dates back more than three thousand years and is immense. Because of its position by the expansive ocean, this old temple of Kanniyakumari also offers hypnotic visual splendour. This temple is a must-visit for everyone who visits Kanniyakumari!

The mystery of the goddess' nose ring

Intriguingly, the temple's main deity is also named Bhagavathi Amman. Within the temple lies an exquisite statue of the goddess, which is adorned with a remarkable diamond nose ring. This nose ring has sparked numerous captivating tales, with its origins traced back to a King Cobra, according to myth.

One fascinating legend tells the story of a sailor who mistook the nose ring's glimmer for a guiding beacon and tragically ran his ship aground. As a result, the temple's eastern door was sealed permanently and is only unsealed on five specific dates each year. This adds an air of mystery and anticipation to the temple's annual schedule.

Divine processions amidst festivities

You can visit this historic temple to seek the grace of the Goddess at any time, but the experience is truly special during the annual festivities. The most significant celebration at the temple is the Vaisakhi festival, which is typically observed in May. This 10-day celebration involves processions with the utsava idol of Goddess Kumari. Other important festivals at the shrine include Navaratri, Float, Car, and Kalabham (Sandal) festivals.
