Kanniyakumari’s avian wonderland

Koonthankulam Bird Sanctuary, just minutes away from Kanniyakumari, is an idyllic destination for bird enthusiasts. Covering over 320 acres, the sanctuary serves as home for hundreds of migrating birds during each season.

Visiting this sanctuary is like entering an avian symphony. You'll be met by much chirping, cooing, honking and hooting, as all the various types of birds go through their day.  This sanctuary is home to many species of migratory birds such as flamingos, painted storks and pelicans who fly here during winter months. Some fly for long, long distances to come here to nest. The bar headed goose comes all the way from Siberia. The nearby villagers are very protective of these birds and don't even celebrate the popular festival of Diwali. They do not want the sound of fireworks to scare away their beloved birds.

As you explore the sanctuary's trails , you will have ample opportunity to observe these remarkable birds up close. Bring binoculars and cameras for maximum viewing pleasure.

Relics to cherish

While the sanctuary doesn't sell souvenirs directly, local markets of Kanniyakumari offer an assortment of bird-related merchandise that captures its essence. Handcrafted figurines, paintings and textiles with bird imagery are among the many choices you'll find there.
