The inscriptions found within the temple, date back to the 10th and 12th centuries. These inscriptions provide valuable insights into the historical background of the region.
The Kandaswamy Temple is located in the heart of the town. According to legend, the temple was once submerged under the soil due to floods and was covered with a dense forest of palm trees. The idol of Murugan was rediscovered under a palm leaf by Sri Chidambaram Swamy, a descendant of the Sangam poets. Chidambaram Swamy rebuilt the temple in the 17th century. The idol of Murugan is in a standing posture, as Kandaswamy and there are separate shrines for Murugan's consorts, and Shiva and Parvati.
