A holy abode of Lord Nataraja

The Arulmigu Patteeswarar Swamy Temple, is a spiritually and historically significant temple, situated in the town of Perur, merely 9 kilometres from Coimbatore. Devoted to Lord Pateeswarar the temple was established by the famed Chola king, Karikaala Chola and is said to date back to the 2nd Century CE. This remarkable temple exemplifies the excellence of Dravidian architectural style, showcasing elaborate ornamentation. Its pillars and halls are embellished with meticulous carvings and sculptures. It is widely celebrated for its awe-inspiring depiction of its main deity, Lord Natraja, an avatar of Lord Shiva.

The ceiling is adorned with a sequence of stone chains, presenting an unusual spectacle. It is believed that the main deity is a ‘swayambu’, or a self-manifested icon. There are other beautiful icons of Shiva in the form of Bhikshadana, Gajasamhara and Veerabhadra. The temple also houses the Patti Vinayakar shrine for Lord Ganesha.

A temple of enigmatic narratives

The temple is a repository of enchanting folklore. The scar that embellishes the idol of Lord Pateeswarar is purportedly attributed to Kamdhenu, the progenitor cow, and her imprint is said to be conserved within the temple. It is believed that Kamdhenu's offspring inadvertently discovered a sacred Shivalinga whilst foraging, giving rise to the establishment of the temple that now enshrines this highly respected emblem of devotion.

According to another myth, it is believed that the temple was blessed by the divine presence of Lord Shiva, who performed at this spot the divine dance of ecstasy, the Ananda Thandavam. This sacred terrain has also hosted many renowned Tamil poets and saints, such as Sundarar and Sambandar,

Hindu temples usually have one sacred tree inside the campus. This temple has two – Irava Panai (deathless palm) and Pirava Puli (birthless tamarind). Symbolically they signify that a devotee of this temple would enjoy long life, and on death would be emancipated from the cycle of birth and rebirth.
