A temple of enigmatic narratives
The temple is a repository of enchanting folklore. The scar that embellishes the idol of Lord Pateeswarar is purportedly attributed to Kamdhenu, the progenitor cow, and her imprint is said to be conserved within the temple. It is believed that Kamdhenu's offspring inadvertently discovered a sacred Shivalinga whilst foraging, giving rise to the establishment of the temple that now enshrines this highly respected emblem of devotion.
According to another myth, it is believed that the temple was blessed by the divine presence of Lord Shiva, who performed at this spot the divine dance of ecstasy, the Ananda Thandavam. This sacred terrain has also hosted many renowned Tamil poets and saints, such as Sundarar and Sambandar,
Hindu temples usually have one sacred tree inside the campus. This temple has two – Irava Panai (deathless palm) and Pirava Puli (birthless tamarind). Symbolically they signify that a devotee of this temple would enjoy long life, and on death would be emancipated from the cycle of birth and rebirth.
