A man-made wonder flanked by nature

There is something imposing about dams that overwhelm the onlooker. An experience that further intensifies when you visit the Bhavani Sagar Dam due to its exquisite location. Built on the Bhavani River between Mettupalayam and Sathyamangalam in Erode District, Tamil Nadu, this architectural marvel is surrounded by dense woodland, rolling hills, and breathtaking vistas. Just 80 kilometres from Coimbatore, this reservoir is one of the landmark attractions to visit.

From a historical feat to a sustainability landmark

One look at this magnificent reservoir and you’ll realise why it is considered to be one of the world’s largest earthen dams. Second, to be more precise. You’ll be amazed to discover that the earthen bund itself runs for 8 Kms from Zero Point. The construction of this dam itself is a historical feat compared to none. It was the largest irrigation project after India’s Independence with a construction cost of 21 Crores. What you witness now is a multi-purpose Dam that helps store water for irrigation, generate electricity, supply drinking water, control floods and manage the silt formation in the downstream river. The dam is also used to divert water to the Lower Bhavani Project Canal. The two Hydel Power Stations together generate 332 MW of power. Imagine the limitless possibilities it can create.

A green oasis for humans and wildlife alike

Towering majestically over the Bhavani River, this man-made wonder provides the ideal getaway for adventure enthusiasts or anyone seeking a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. The artificial body of water created by the dam offers recreational activities like boating and fishing. With an orchid park and expansive garden close by, it offers the ideal environment for both relaxing family picnics and engaging outdoor expeditions. As you take an idyllic stroll along the waterfront, you will be greeted by stunning views of the surrounding mountains and forests. This reservoir is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, particularly during winters when many migratory birds fly in.

Treasures beyond the Dam

The Bhavanisagar Village, from where the dam gets its name, has much to offer for the avid traveller. This Town Panchayat located in Sathyamangalam Taluk of Erode District is in fact a recovery forest. Which means its lost habitat is slowly rejuvenating. It forms part of the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve (UNESCO) and one can witness the rich biodiversity of Western Ghats here.

Venture further to discover the intriguing tribal settlement at Thengumarahada in Nilgiris. As you explore through the eastern slope of the Western Ghats, you get to observe the distribution of forests into five distinct patterns, based on the altitude - ranging from Sub Tropical Shrub Jungle, High Tropical Savannah, Dry Deciduous Forest, Moist Deciduous Forest to  High Altitude Semi-evergreen Forest. Thengumarahada is also famous for being one of the most preferred breeding grounds for elephants.
