A tribute to a legendary poet

Valluvar Kottam stands as a majestic monument in Chennai's heart, honouring revered classical Tamil poet and saint Thiruvalluvar with its temple-chariot-like structure. At 39 metres in height, this extraordinary structure stands as an incredible testament to Tamil Nadu's cultural legacy and literary brilliance - you are welcomed into its premises by an effigy of this revered saint to pay respects to his legacy.

An architectural marvel of enduring wisdom

Valluvar Kottam stands as an architectural masterpiece of lasting wisdom, both for its grandeur and unique design. Without any supporting columns for structure, its giant columns in both auditorium and hall corridors feature 1,330 verses from Thirukkural by Thiruvalluvar over 2000 years ago that reflect human wisdom - making Valluvar Kottam an extraordinary fusion of art, literature and spirituality.

Inside Valluvar Kottam temple stands a life-size statue of Thiruvalluvar who presides over his chariot perched atop an ancient vehicle known as Thaer. An estimated 3,000 blocks of stone were used in its creation as it stands as a testament to craftsmanship and dedication. Valluvar Kottam holds up to four auditoriums which can accommodate four thousand people simultaneously and hold the entire Thirukkural on granite columns for viewing pleasure.

Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi's visionary leadership led to this magnificent structure being planned and constructed during the 1970s under South Indian architect V Ganapati Sthapati in tribute to Thiruvalluvar's notable contributions. Valluvar Kottam offers its visitors the perfect setting to experience its stunning beauty during sunrise or as the sun dips over the horizon in the evening hours - it really comes alive then!

Valluvar Kottam, in addition to being an important tourist destination in Chennai, also plays host to some of the city's major exhibitions and events. Complementing its architecture perfectly is its charming temple car affixed to its floor; providing an aesthetic addition that brings life and delight into this monument.

Thiruvalluvar's literary legacy continues to touch lives around the globe and Valluvar Kottam plays an essential role in honouring and commemorating it. Notably, Mother Teresa herself planted some saplings at Valluvar Kottam during one of her visits in 1984 which is commemorated with a stone plate.

Stories from the past

Thiruvalluvar, commonly referred to as 'Divine Poet,' is one of Tamil literature's most esteemed poets and creators of timeless wisdom through his Thirukkural which spans 133 chapters and 1,330 verses. As one of its oldest and most profound works in its language, Thirukkurals provide guidance for human morality and life improvement and echo with timeless knowledge that resonates through time.

Thirukkual is an ancient work in Tamil literature which serves to uphold morals and enrich life through poetry writing styles such as Kural. They act as guides for human morals and life improvement.
