In the 1880s, enthralled by the beach's charm, Governor Mountstuart Grant Duff oversaw the creation of a promenade along its shores and named it Madaras Marina. This served as a meeting place for many freedom fighters before the independence.
The Triumph of Labour, sculpted by Debi Prasad Roy Chowdhury, depicts four men struggling to move a rock and was installed on Republic Day in 1959. Later in 1968, the statues of Tamil literature personalities named Kambar, Avvaiyar, Thiruvalluvar, Subramania Bharathiyar, Veeramamunivar and Bharathidasan were added. Subsequently, statues and memorials of other renowned figures like Kannagi and famous politicians like Arignar Anna, Marudur Gopalan Ramachandran, Jayalalitha, and M Karunanidhi were incorporated into the area.
