History abounds in galleries to open-air exhibits
Inaugurated by Nitish Kumar - the Railway Minister at that time - as the Regional Railway Museum, it was renamed the Chennai Rail Museum on August 22, 2016, commemorating the 377th Madras Day.
The museum boasts two galleries and outdoor exhibits that chronicle the rich history of the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) and Indian Railways. The museum also offers a glimpse into Neal's ball token system, a safety mechanism for single lines in those days, and features a coach that once carried Mahatma Gandhi.
About 41 train models are on display, including an 1895 Fowler steam ploughing engine and several 1860’s double-deck coaches.
Explore clocks dating over a hundred years, posters and maps, and life-size models of iconic railway vehicles, such as the Nilgiri Mountain Railway coach (the Ooty train).
Walk into the art gallery or the ICF Diamond Jubilee Gallery, adorned with digitally restored photographs by Ian Manning, including photographs of notable figures such as Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and artefacts like a first-class compartment seat.
