Where the urban jungle meets the green oasis

Chennai, the bustling capital city of Tamil Nadu, is known for its rich cultural heritage, delicious cuisine, and beautiful beaches. However, amidst the chaos of the city, there lies a hidden gem that offers a tranquil escape from the urban jungle - the Adyar Eco Park also known as Tholkappia poonga.

As you step into the Adyar Eco Park, you'll be greeted by a lush green landscape that stretches out as far as the eye can see. The park is situated along the banks of the Adyar River and is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. From towering trees to colourful butterflies, from exotic birds to rare reptiles, the park is a treasure trove of biodiversity that is sure to leave you in awe.

One of the best ways to explore the Adyar Eco Park is by taking a leisurely stroll along its many nature trails. The park has several well-maintained walking paths that wind through the dense foliage, offering a chance to immerse yourself in the beauty of nature.

From the colourful kingfisher to the majestic peacock, the park is a birdwatcher's paradise. You might also spot some of the park's resident reptiles, such as the water monitor lizard or the black pond turtle.

A learning experience

The Adyar Eco Park is not just a place to enjoy nature; it's also a place to learn about it. The park has a well-equipped interpretation centre that offers visitors a chance to learn about the park's ecology and the importance of conservation.

The centre has several interactive exhibits and displays that showcase the park's biodiversity and the efforts made to protect it. You can also attend one of the many educational programs and workshops that the park organises throughout the year.

The park has several designated picnic areas where you can spread out a blanket and enjoy a leisurely meal with family and friends. The park also has several food stalls and cafes that offer a range of snacks and refreshments. You can enjoy a cup of steaming hot tea or a cold drink while taking in the beautiful surroundings.

Exploring the surroundings

Just a short distance from the park is the Theosophical Society, a sprawling campus that is home to several historic buildings and beautiful gardens. You can also visit the nearby Elliot's Beach, a popular spot for swimming and sunbathing, or take a stroll along Marina Beach, the world's second-longest urban beach.

The Adyar Eco Park is open every day from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and the best time to visit is on weekdays, if possible. The park can get quite crowded on weekends and on holidays.

The park has a nominal entry fee, and there are several parking areas available for visitors. It's a good idea to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring along a hat and sunscreen, as the park can get quite sunny during the day.
