Where legends unfold

Amidst the pristine landscapes of Sikkim, Yuksom stands as a testament to time, culture, and spirituality. This historical town, perched 1,780 meters (5,840 feet) above sea level, weaves together myths, legends, and breathtaking vistas.

The three wise men

The very name “Yuksom” resonates with ancient wisdom. It translates to the “meeting place of the three learned monks”. These revered Tibetan monks, guided by cosmic forces, anointed Phuntsog Namgyal as the first Chogyal (the temporal and religious king) of Sikkim. The title “Chogyal” embodies righteousness and spiritual leadership.

Provenance and coronation

In the year 1642 AD, Phuntsog Namgyal established Yuksom as the first capital of the Kingdom of Sikkim. Here, amidst the whispering pines and snow-capped peaks, he ascended the “Throne of Norbugang”—the sacred site where the first monarch of Sikkim was crowned.

The cosmic connection

Yuksom cradles the Norbugang Chorten, a mystical monument near the throne. Legend has it that Guru Padmasambhava, the Lotus-Born, blessed this spot. The chorten symbolizes the “third eye”, a gateway to higher consciousness. Pilgrims seek solace here, their prayers merging with the whispering winds.

A beacon of faith

In 1701, the visionary Chogyal established the Dubdi Monastery. Perched atop a hill, fluttering prayer flags carrying hopes to the heavens, pilgrims ascend its stone steps, seeking enlightenment. From Dubdi, the panorama of snow-clad peaks unfolds—a canvas painted by gods.

Gateway to Kangchenjunga

Yuksom is more than history; it’s a gateway to adventure. As the base camp for trekking to Mount Kangchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak, it beckons mountaineers from every corner. The Dzongri-Goechala Trek, an 8-9 day odyssey, leads to Kangchenjunga’s foothills. Each step reveals rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, and vistas that steal your breath.

The allure of Mount Kabru

As the sun kisses the peaks, Yuksom unveils its secrets. The Mount Kabru range graces the horizon, its icy spires piercing the cerulean sky. Here, time slows, and the soul finds respite. The air whispers tales of ancient kings, fluttering prayer flags, and the eternal dance of mountains.

In Yuksom, legends unfold like prayer flags in the wind—vibrant, timeless, and etched into the very fabric of existence.
