A pilgrimage in the Himalayas

At an elevation of 17,800 feet and cradled amidst the rugged grandeur of the Great Himalayas, Gurudongmar Lake stands as a testament to nature’s awe-inspiring beauty. This pristine water body is not only one of the highest lakes in India but also a revered pilgrimage site for Buddhists and Sikhs.

The Guru’s blessing

According to ancient legends, Gurudongmar Lake owes its existence to the compassionate touch of Guru Padmasambhava. As the revered guru traversed the Himalayan terrain, he encountered the parched locals who yearned for water. Touched by their plight, Guru Padmasambhava blessed a portion of the lake, ensuring that it would never freeze completely, even in the bone-chilling depths of winter. This sacred act transformed Gurudongmar into a lifeline for the people, providing them with sustenance and hope.

Fertile belief

The lake’s crystal-clear waters are believed to possess mystical properties. Locals hold that drinking from Gurudongmar can resolve fertility issues in women. While this claim lacks scientific validation, the temple adjacent to the lake witnesses countless prayers and offerings. Colourful prayer flags flutter in the mountain breeze, infusing the surroundings with mysticism and turning Gurudongmar into a “Wish Lake” for thousands of visitors.

The source of life

Gurudongmar Lake serves as the birthplace of the Teesta River. Fed by glaciers, the lake’s waters flow into the Tso Lahmu Lake, which eventually gives rise to the mighty Teesta. As you stand by the lake’s shores, the hilly topography and glaciers obscure much of its expanse, creating an illusion of modest size. Yet, beneath the surface lies the origin of a river that sustains life downstream.

A panorama of peaks

As you gaze across the lake, the snow-covered mountain ranges seem to float on its surface. The ethereal beauty of this high-altitude oasis leaves visitors spellbound. Blue sheep and yaks occasionally dot the landscape, adding to the surreal experience.

Gurudongmar Lake transcends mere geography; it embodies faith, resilience, and the delicate balance between myth and reality. As you stand by its shores, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and fluttering prayer flags, you’ll understand why this sacred lake is more than water – it’s a testament to the human spirit’s enduring quest for the divine.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Gurudongmar Lake is between November and June when the weather is quite pleasant. The lake is frozen from October to March – besides of course, one section.
