A fertile haven in the Himalayas

Located at an altitude of about 5,500 feet above sea level, Chungthang is a tranquil hamlet nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas in Sikkim. Surrounded by towering mountains and verdant valleys, the town offers a serene ambience that rejuvenates the soul. Chungthang holds a significant place in Sikkim's history. It is the junction point as the confluence of two sacred rivers, the Lachen and Lachung. Legend has it that Guru Padmasambhava, the revered Buddhist saint, once meditated here and had infused the land with spiritual energy. The word Chungthang is derived from 'Tsemo Rinchen Thang', which translates to 'top precious plain' in Tibetan.

This revered site boasts a sacred rock, known as 'Lhedo' or 'Neydo,' bearing the imprints of Guru Padmasambhava. It is said that during the 8th century, Guru Rinpoche, founder of Nyingma Buddhism, visited Tibet. On his return journey, he encountered and subdued a mischievous demon at Tsunthang. That was the same place where he also miraculously initiated the growth of paddy fields by tossing leftover rice. The area's significance is enshrined in the Tsun Hang Rigdzin Choeling Gonpa, a monastery built in 1788 by Lepcha Buddhists. Over the centuries, Chungthang became a vital stop on the ancient trade routes that connected India with Tibet.
