The legacy of Karni Mata

Udaipur, the city of lakes, holds a treasure trove of historical and cultural wonders, and the Shri Manshapurna Karni Mata Temple is a shining jewel within this collection. Deeply rooted in local folklore and religious beliefs, this revered temple is dedicated to Karni Mata, a revered female Hindu sage and manifestation of the powerful Goddess Durga.

Located atop the picturesque Machla Magra Hills, near the serene Doodh Talai Lake, the temple houses a sacred stone idol of Karni Mata and offers a breathtaking view of the city. Karni Mata, a revered figure in Rajput history, is celebrated for her immense kindness and the miraculous powers she used to uplift and protect the people of Rajasthan in the 14th century. Legends surrounding her compassion and acts of wonder continue to inspire devotees even today.

It's important to note that this temple is distinct from the ‘Rat Temple of India’ which is located in Deshnoke town of Bikaner district, Rajasthan. That temple, also dedicated to Karni Mata, houses over 20,000 rats, who are worshipped as mythical creatures.

A blend of faith, tranquillity and grandeur

Shri Manshapurna Karni Mata Temple beckons pilgrims and travellers alike. Built by Maharana Karan Singh between 1620 and 1628, the temple's construction coincided with the development of the surrounding residential areas.

The temple's serene surroundings are further accentuated by its architectural grandeur. Just outside the main entrance, flanked by two lion paintings, lies a Shiva Linga, a revered representation of Lord Shiva. Stepping inside, your gaze will be drawn to the intricately carved white pillars that line the interior. As you delve deeper, the beautifully adorned stone idol of Karni Mata, the temple's focal point, awaits. Adjacent to the idol, the presence of mor pankh (peacock feathers) adds another layer of cultural significance.

Reaching Shri Manshapurna Karni Mata Temple is an experience in itself. Nestled amidst the scenic Machla Magra Hills, the temple offers a picturesque journey. You have two options for your ascent. For those seeking a more traditional pilgrimage experience, a climb up the stairs allows you to soak in the serene atmosphere. For those seeking breathtaking vistas, the ropeway offers an unforgettable experience. As you glide upwards, be prepared to be mesmerised by the panoramic views of the shimmering Doodh Talai Lake and the captivating Udaipur cityscape sprawling below. As you approach the temple, witness the countless colourful chunari (sacred red cloths) tied along the railings by devotees seeking blessings. These vibrant offerings create a visually captivating display of faith.

A warrior sage and protector

Karni Mata, also revered as Bhagwati Karniji Maharaj and known by many names like Bhagwati, Mehaai, Jagdamba, and Kiniyani, transcends the boundaries of a typical deity. She was a powerful figure, a warrior sage who walked the earth between the 14th and 16th centuries in Western Rajasthan. Karni Mata wasn't just a spiritual leader; she was a symbol of strength and protection for the Rajput and Charan communities of northwestern India. As their tutelary deity, she held a special place in their hearts. Her influence extended further, as she was also the official deity of the royal families of Bikaner and Jodhpur, highlighting the immense respect she commanded.

Karni Mata embraced an ascetic life, dedicating herself to spiritual pursuits. Her piety and wisdom resonated with those around her, earning her widespread reverence during her lifetime. Legends abound about the miracles she performed for the betterment of the community, solidifying her image as a benevolent protector. The essence of Karni Mata goes beyond her warrior spirit. She embodied the ideals of non-violence and peaceful coexistence. Her legacy serves as a source of strength and legitimacy for the Rajput community, a testament to the profound impact she left on their history and culture.
