The enchanting ‘milk pond’

Famously known as the City of Lakes, Udaipur is renowned for its picturesque landscapes and multiple lakes. Among its many jewels lies Dudh Talai Lake (or Doodh Talai Lake), a serene water body that captivates visitors with its beauty and significance.

The name ‘Doodh Talai’ translates to ‘milk pond.’ According to local lore, this quaint lake once served as a vital resource for the cows in the area. These cows, housed in government shelters, provided milk for the royal kitchen. The lake fulfilled their daily needs, offering water for drinking, bathing, and grazing. Thus, Dudh Talai became synonymous with sustenance and nourishment.

Dudh Talai Lake nestles adjacent to the iconic Lake Pichola, near the Shiva Niwas Palace (the residence of Maharana Fateh Singh). Surrounded by small hillocks, it offers breathtaking vistas of the city. Visitors can witness dazzling sunsets from its shores, with Lake Pichola and the Aravalli hills as a stunning backdrop.

Every lake needs a garden

Within Dudh Talai’s embrace lies the Manikya Lal Verma Garden, also known as the Doodh Talai Garden. Constructed in 1995 by the Nagar Parishad (Municipal Council) of Udaipur, this garden provides panoramic views of Lake Pichola and Dudh Talai. Visitors can ascend via steps or a separate road to reach the garden, where they’ll find the Karni Mata Temple atop a hillock, where a white stone idol of the goddess Karni Mata resides.

A musical oasis

Adjacent to Manikya Lal Verma Garden, the Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Park offers yet another delightful experience. Developed by the Urban Improvement Trust (UIT) of Udaipur, this small garden boasts Rajasthan’s first “Musical Fountain”—a marvel that adds to the spectacular views.

The ropeway adventure

For an exhilarating ride, tourists can take the ropeway from the top of Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Park to the Karni Mata Temple. This 4-minute journey, spanning around 500 meters, offers panoramic views of Udaipur, including Lake Pichola, the majestic City Palace complex, and the Sajjangarh Fort.

Dudh Talai Lake is more than just a water body—it’s a testament to Udaipur’s rich history, a place where nature, spirituality, and leisure converge. Whether you’re admiring the sunset, exploring the gardens, or riding the ropeway, Dudh Talai promises an unforgettable experience in the heart of Rajasthan’s royal city.
