A reverent journey
With 19 chhatris that honour each monarch who has been cremated there, Udaipur's Ahar Cenotaphs date back to 1710, when Maharana Amar Singh II became the first Mewar monarch to be honoured here. The Cenotaphs serve as a timeless testament to the spirit and resilience of these unconquerable leaders, who never knew defeat in a battle!
The Cenotaph of Maharana Sangram Singh, constructed in 1734, stands out among these architectural marvels as being particularly stunning and is the largest and most photographed of the chhatris. With an octagonal dome supported by eight majestic pillars and intricate carvings, including that of Hindu symbols like the trident and lotus, as well as depictions of Lord Shiva, the images of the Maharaja himself adorning its exterior make for an unparalleled viewing experience.
Similarly, other cenotaphs or chhatris give insight into Udaipur's rich heritage, reflecting the grandeur of a bygone era. Carved from the finest marble by skilled artisans, these cenotaphs are veritable masterpieces of architectural prowess and artistic finesse. Every inch of their pristine surfaces is adorned with intricate carvings that tell tales of valour, love, and devotion, inviting visitors to delve deeper into the rich tapestry of Udaipur's regal heritage.
