The abundance of lakes has also earned Udaipur the nickname ‘Venice of the East.’

Legacy of legends: Udaipur's historical saga

Udaipur's story unfolds like a captivating legend. Founded by Maharana Udai Singh II in 1553, the city served as a refuge for the Mewar dynasty, known for its valour and resistance against Mughal emperors. Maharana Udai Singh II's legacy of resistance lives on in the very stones of the City Palace Complex, a sprawling labyrinth of courtyards, museums, and intricately carved buildings where his descendants sought shelter.

Within the City Palace, ascend to the Bada Mahal which is known to be the men’s section and marvel at the breathtaking panorama of Lake Pichola, where the majestic City Palace appears to float on the water's surface. Imagine the grandeur of the Mewar court as you explore the Crystal Gallery, its collection of glittering crystal ware and chandeliers sparkling under the soft glow of the lights.

Jag Mandir Palace, known as 'The Lake Garden Palace,' is a striking three-story marble and sandstone structure on Lake Pichola's southern island. The palace features life-sized marble elephants and architectural gems like the Gul Mahal and Zenana Mahal. It is complemented by lush gardens, a Rajasthani cuisine restaurant, and a museum.

Nearby, the Taj Lake Palace, originally Jag Niwas Palace, also on Lake Pichola, was built as a summer retreat and converted into a five-star hotel later. Known as one of the world's most romantic hotels, it offers opulent décor with ivory white and black marble, luxurious hospitality, recreational activities, and a range of dining options from Rajasthani to European cuisines.

Perched atop the Aravalli Range, 85 km away from Udaipur, lies a monumental testament to Rajput valour and architectural brilliance – the Kumbhalgarh Fort. Built in the 15th century by Maharana Kumbha, it spans over 36 kilometres, making it one of India's largest and most intricate fortresses. You can explore its imposing walls, intricate temples, and royal palaces, immersing yourself in the rich heritage and panoramic vistas it offers.

Cultural delight beyond the palaces

Constructed in the 18th century by a Mewar minister, Bagore Ki Haveli is a historic mansion-turned-museum on the shores of Lake Pichola. The haveli boasts over 100 rooms, each adorned with intricate Rajasthani art, including paintings, glasswork, and carvings that showcase the region's heritage and architectural elegance. It houses a variety of Rajput-era artefacts, such as copper vessels and jewellery boxes. For a cultural experience, visit in the evening to enjoy the Dharohar Dance Show, where traditional Rajasthani dances like Ghoomar and Kathak are performed. These spirited performances of local music and dance highlight the cultural richness of Rajasthan, making Bagore Ki Haveli a pivotal destination in Udaipur.

Udaipur's lakes: A reflection of time’s majesty

Udaipur weaves its charm around the numerous tranquil bodies of water that dot its landscape. Lake Pichola has stood out as a jewel in the city’s crown since 1362. Take a boat ride on Lake Pichola and enjoy unparalleled views of the majestic City Palace and the mystical Jag Mandir Palace, whose stunning reflections create breathtaking vistas, turning each moment into a living postcard.

Fateh Sagar Lake, located northwest of Udaipur and the second-largest in the city, offers picturesque boating experiences. Escape to the tranquil waters of Badi Lake, a sprawling artificial lake outside Udaipur. Ideal for peaceful picnics and refreshing swims, it also offers a scenic trek to the 'Bahubali' hilltop, famed for its stunning sunrise and sunset views.
