But the true architectural gem lies in the Madhavendra Bhawan, a two-storey building with suites for the king and his queens. Commissioned by Sawai Madho Singh, this palatial structure is divided into nine apartments, each with its lobby, bedrooms, toilets, kitchen and storerooms. The latest addition of India's first contemporary public sculpture park has also added a touch of art to this heritage site, elevating its stature further.
As you wander through the palace, you will witness India's rich artistic legacy that continues to evolve and captivate the hearts and minds of all who venture through its enchanting halls. Another fascinating thing about this majestic fort is the Jaipur Wax Museum, boasting lifelike wax statues of iconic public figures with artefacts that testify to a bygone royal era, further elevating your overall experience. Lastly, owing to its location at the hilltop, the ramparts of Nahargarh Fort offer breathtaking panoramic views of Jaipur's cityscape.
The legend of a royal haunting
Shrouded in mystery, Nahargarh Fort isn't just a historical landmark reflecting the regal past of the Rajputs. This grand edifice has had a legend associated with it since its construction.
The fort was conceived as a summer retreat, a place of respite and relaxation for the royal family of Jaipur. Yet, its strategic location atop the hills made it a formidable stronghold. Interestingly, the fort's construction faced a supernatural challenge. It is believed that the spirit of the Rajput prince, Nahar Singh Bhomia, used to haunt the fort, opposing its construction. However, a temple dedicated to his spirit within the fort's precincts appeased his discontent, allowing the grand vision to come to fruition.
Whether these stories hold truth or not, they add a layer of intrigue to the fort, inviting you to imagine the whispers carried on the wind and the secrets locked away within its walls.
