A palace that floats on water

Have you ever dreamt of discovering a hidden palace veiled by the shimmering waters of a lake? The pink city of India, Jaipur, is home to one such precious gem. Welcome to Jal Mahal, a majestic palace rising from the still waters of Man Sagar Lake. This red sandstone palace seems to float on the surface while its elegant form reflects on the serene waters of the lake.

The Jal Mahal's name comes from its stunning location in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, which translates to "Water Palace." However, the palace doesn't float on the water; most of the building rests submerged beneath the lake's surface, with only the top floor visible. This creates the illusion of a palace emerging from the water.

Back in 1699, the foundation of this magnificent palace was laid, but in the 18th century, his Highness Jai Singh II adorned the palace and its tranquil lake with exquisite renovations. There was a time when Jaipur's rulers used this palace as a place of leisure and recreation, but today, it invites travellers from far and wide to witness its mystique and grandeur.

Let's dig deeper into the history and beauty of this captivating landmark and unravel the secrets it holds within its walls.

A photographer's dream come true

The enchanting spell of the wondrous Jal Mahal extends beyond the palace itself. Imagine yourself on the shores of Man Sagar Lake, the gentle breeze carrying the scent of fresh water. Lush green hills frame the serene landscape, creating a picture-perfect backdrop for this architectural marvel. Look a little closer; you might spot colourful birds flitting through the trees, creating a paradise for photographers.

But Jal Mahal isn't just a visual feast. Hop on a boat and explore the lake from a different perspective. Feel the gentle sway of the water as you get closer to the palace, marvelling at its design and architecture from a unique vantage point.

As the sun dips below the horizon, the sky explodes in a kaleidoscope of colours, and the water shimmers with golden hues, casting a magical glow on the palace. After unwinding around the palace for a couple of hours enjoying bumpy camel rides or watching beautiful birds, you will witness the Jal Mahal transforming into a jewel. At night, the palace is enveloped in warm light, and its structure glows against the inky water, creating a breathtaking reflection that rivals the stars above.
