Chittorgarh Fort was initially constructed by Chitrangad of the Mori (Mourya) dynasty during the 7th century AD. According to legend, however, its construction may have been initiated by Bhim, one of the Pandava warriors from the Hindu epic Mahabharata. Legend has it that Bhim's strike here caused a reservoir to form; now known as Bhimlat Kund.
Fort Rajputana's security is enhanced by seven gates - Ram Pol, Lakshman Pol, Padal Pol, Ganesh Pol, Jorla Pol, Bhairon Pol, Hanuman Pol - all bearing distinctive names and tales - though Suraj Pol or "Sun Gate" stands as its grand entranceway.
