Where great works come alive
Centuries ago, Sukh Mahal emerged as a haven of tranquillity for the rulers of Rajasthan. This exquisite palace has served as a retreat from the scorching desert sun. Its name, "Sukh Mahal," translates to "Palace of Bliss," reflecting the serene ambience it provided to the weary souls of royalty. The highlight of the palace is undoubtedly the magnificent white marble chhatri, or umbrella, perched atop the second floor. This architectural feat offers breathtaking panoramic views of the lake and the city beyond. Explore the on-site museum and see the local artefacts, miniature paintings depicting royal life, and sculptures that bring the history of Bundi alive.
One interesting fact about this palace is that it is famous in the literary world courtesy of a famous English author, Rudyard Kipling. It is said that while staying here, Kipling wrote a few chapters of his novel Kim and also a couple of chapters of Jungle Book. The Sukh Mahal Complex has two parts. After entering, there is a small guest house with a couple of rooms on the ground floor and the terrace. One of the rooms on the terrace is named Kipling’s Palace. It is this room where Kipling had stayed. Now, this empty room exhibits a few photographs of Kipling and pictures of the cover pages of his novel Kim and Jungle Book.
