Bhima's encounter with Hanumanji
The legend goes like this.... Bhima, one of the five warrior Pandava princes from the age of Mahabharata, was known to possess unparalleled physical strength and had also an element of arrogance for the same. Once while moving in the forest during his exile, near Pandavpol, he encountered a frail, old monkey lying on the ground and obstructing the path. Bhima disdainfully asked him to move aside. The old monkey expressed his inability to do so because of his old age and frail body. He, instead, asked Bhima to move him. Bhima tried to do so but miserably failed in his attempt and couldn't even budge the monkey. Realising that this was no ordinary monkey, Bhima asked for forgiveness and requested him to reveal his true identity and Lord Hanuman, who wanted to teach a lesson of humility to Bhima, incarnated himself in his original form. Recognising him, Bhima paid his obeisance. Lord Hanuman blessed him and all the Pandav brothers. Thereafter Bhima created a Pol, a (natural opening or gate,) in the rocks through which Pandavas are believed to have passed. Hence the name 'Pandupol'.
