Sanctuary of spirituality and heritage

Welcome to the Bhartrihari Temple, a sanctuary of spirituality and heritage nestled amidst the picturesque landscapes of Rajasthan. This ancient temple, dating back thousands of years, holds within its walls the sacred Samadhi of Baba Bhartrihari also known as Yogi Bhartrihari Nath, a revered figure in the region’s history.

As you step into this hallowed space, prepare to embark on a journey of discovery and introspection, where myths and legends intertwine with the tranquillity of the surrounding hills and cascading waterfalls.

Located about 35 km from Alwar in Rajasthan close to Sariska National Tiger Reserve. The Bhartrihari temple, a centuries-old marvel, stands as a prominent landmark in Rajasthan.

History and the story

Raja Bhartrihari was a legendary figure in Indian history and folklore. He was a poet, philosopher, and king who ruled the kingdom of Ujjain in the 1st century BCE.

Legend has it that King Bhartrihari was deeply in love with his wife, Queen Pingala. However, he soon realised that she was unfaithful to him. Heartbroken and disillusioned, he renounced his kingdom and became a wandering ascetic.

Baba Bhartrihari, as he became known, meditated in Rajasthan under the guidance of Guru Gorakhnath. He developed profound insight into the human condition and was able to inspire transformation through his teachings.

Samadhi and the temple

Locals believe that once there was a serious scarcity of water in that area. To help the locals he performed a miracle and water sprung forth from a rock. Thereafter this area gained reverence from the people from far and wide.

Baba Bhartrihari achieved enlightenment through meditation and spiritual practice, ultimately attaining Samadhi by burying himself alive. The temple now stands where he chose to attain samadhi.

Above the Samadhi of Yogi Bhartrihar Nath, the temple is constructed in traditional Rajasthani architectural style. The devotees maintain a perpetually burning lamp and a blazing fire pit as symbols of reverence.

Annual festival

Though the temple is devoted to Baba Bhartrihari, the temple reveres Lord Shiva through various festivals, notably hosting a unique fair in the Hindu month of Bhadrapad. It is renowned for its sanctity and reputed miracles, drawing numerous pilgrims annually.

Conclusion

As one leaves the temple precincts, one carries a sense of tranquillity and reverence, enriched by the spiritual journey that unfolds within those sacred walls. The Bhartrihari Temple, with its timeless charm and spiritual aura, remains etched in one’s memory as a sanctuary of peace and enlightenment, inviting all who seek solace amidst life's myriad complexities. Beyond the Bhartrihari Temple, one can visit the Sariska National Park, Alwar Museum, Alwar City Palace and many more sites.
