The history
Bala Quila is an ancient heritage spot and is also known as the 'Young Fort'. It was built in around 1200 CE and subsequently fortified by Hasan Khan Mewati in 1550 A.D. There are 6 historical entrances and the fort is 5km long and 1.5km wide. The fort has been ruled by several kingdoms, like the Mughals, the Marathas, and the Jats. It is a huge fort located on a hilltop at a height of over 1000 feet, which gives an amazing view of the whole city.
The fort has 15 large and 51 small towers, which contain 446 loopholes for long-barrelled muskets that enhance its magnificence and beauty; its eight towers are meant for defence. The structure is heavily fortified and shows off its columns made up of marble and is accompanied by delicately patterned balconies. There are six huge gates, namely pols, Suraj Pol, Laxman Pol, Chand Pol, Krishan Pol and Andheri Gate.
In addition to its exquisite carvings, the fort also contains many other historic structures like Suraj Kud, Jal Mahal, and Nikumbha Mahal Palace. Due to its size and its strategic location on the Aravalli range, the fort protects the magnificent city of Alwar. Except a little renovation, the monument still remains the same what it always has been, reminding tourists of the bygone era and taking them back in time as they stroll through the fort complexes.
