The gateway to Rajasthan

In the royal state of Rajasthan, nestled amid the lush green and ancient Aravalli Hills, lies Alwar, a city that reads like a living history book.

Alwar was once the seat of a princely state, and you can still feel its royal Rajput past everywhere you turn. Think massive forts, stunning palaces, and old-world homes – they're all like whispers telling the story of this glorious place.

As one of Rajasthan's oldest cities, Alwar’s history stretches back millennia. Legend whispers that this very land was once known as Matasya Desh, where the Pandavas of the epic Mahabharata sought refuge during their exile. But Alwar isn't just about history. Lush forests teeming with birdsong and valleys carved by time create a breathtaking landscape here. Tranquil lakes shimmer in the sunlight, reflecting the grandeur of royal hunting chalets that once hosted Rajput princes.

Alwar, situated 180 km from Delhi, serves not only as an eastern gateway to the state of Rajasthan but also as an eternal portal to its rich heritage and cultural diversity.

Moosi Maharani Ki Chhatri, Alwar

A treasure trove of heritage

Alwar is like a giant treasure chest overflowing with historical sites, each showcasing Rajput bravery and architectural brilliance. One of the top places to visit in the city is the Alwar City Palace, which was constructed in 1793 and features a blend of Rajputana and Islamic architectural styles. Picture yourself strolling through courtyards dotted with marble pavilions that resemble giant lotus flowers. Inside, there's a Government Museum that boasts ancient manuscripts (including one about Emperor Babur's life), beautiful Ragamala paintings and even historic swords.

Seeking adventure? Then check out the Bala Quila, also known as Alwar Fort. Perched on a steep hill, this 10th-century giant offers epic views of the city from its watchtowers. Think strong fortifications, elegant marble columns, and delicate balconies with intricate latticework – it's a feast for the eyes! Let's head down to another beauty – Moosi Maharani Ki Chhatri. This captivating cenotaph, built in memory of Maharaja Bakhtawar Singh and his queen, Rani Moosi, is a stunning example of Indo-Islamic architecture. Picture a double-storey building resting on a sandstone platform with intricate carvings and delicate latticework.

The next stop on your historical adventure is the Raja Bharthari Panorama Museum. Marvel at this impressive building, which houses a captivating collection of artefacts telling the life story of the legendary King Bharthari. A short distance away, you'll find the Veer Hasan Khan Mewati Panorama, honouring the great warrior and patriot of the Alwar region. Explore the Tomb of Fateh Jung, a spectacular monument dedicated to the minister of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. You'll be amazed by this architectural gem, which showcases the beauty of Indo-Islamic style with its soaring minarets, elegant domes, and intricate arches.

Sariska: Roars of the wild, whispers of the divine

Get ready to step into a wild wonderland with one of the most famous attractions of Alwar – the stunning Sariska Tiger Reserve, located around 30 km from Alwar city. Sprawling over 800 square kilometres, Sariska is a national park and a haven for nature lovers. Picture a landscape that seamlessly blends mountains, grasslands, dry forests, and dramatic cliffs – a breathtaking canvas painted by nature itself. Hop on a thrilling jeep safari and look out for majestic tigers, elusive jungle cats, playful monkeys, and a vibrant array of birdlife. The adventure doesn't stop there! Deep within the reserve lies the hidden gem of Kankwadi Fort, accessible only by jeep.

There are two well-known temples inside the national park that you should visit. Start with the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple, an ancient architectural masterpiece dedicated to Lord Shiva. The journey to the temple itself is an adventure, with rough roads and breathtaking views adding to the mystique. Then, head to the Pandupol Hanuman Ji Mandir, dedicated to Lord Hanuman. The site is associated with the Pandavas, who spent a part of their exile here in disguise. This temple offers a tranquil escape amidst the beauty of a cascading waterfall.

On the outskirts of Sariska stands the Bhartrihari Temple. Named after the legendary ruler Bhartrihari, this temple has a classic Rajasthani architectural style, with intricate floral designs adorning the shikharas and mandaps.

The green havens of Alwar

Beyond the adventures of Sariska, Alwar unfolds more natural wonders waiting to be discovered. If you crave a peaceful escape, then just 15 km southwest of Alwar, the Siliserh Lake awaits you. Take a boat ride on the tranquil waters, soak up the breathtaking scenery, and keep your eyes peeled for winter water birds and even sunbathing crocodiles (during winter months). For another expansive natural experience, Jaisamand Lake is calling your name! This sprawling waterbody boasts shaded pavilions and captivating towers that dot its banks. It is the perfect spot for a day trip, offering a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. For an adventurous outing, head to Garbhaji Falls, a hidden gem located around 25 km from the city!

Need a quick dose of nature right within the city? Look no further than the Company Garden or Purjan Vihar! This charming green space is a local favourite. It houses a picturesque garden fondly referred to as ‘Simla’ (the Summer House) that provides a welcome respite from the sun. Another popular spot is Nehru Garden, where you can stroll along walking paths, take pictures with your family at the adorable ‘I Love Alwar’ selfie point or let the kids loose in the play area.

Shopping spree, anyone?

Alwar is not just about history and nature; it's a treasure trove for shopaholics, too! Discover a wide range of handcrafted souvenirs, including terracotta figurines, colourful woven carpets, comfy leather mojaris, beautifully embroidered juttis, sparkling bangles, and pottery. Where to find these gems, you ask? Hope Circus is a great starting point, with famous markets like Bazaza Bazaar, Sarafa Bazaar, Malakhera Bazaar and Kedalganj Bazaar all clustered nearby. The star of the show is definitely the famous Alwar ka Mawa (Milk Cake) – a dense dessert made with just milk, sugar, and a hint of cardamom. Don't miss out on this melt-in-your-mouth masterpiece! Some local specialities include piping hot jalebis, crispy kachoris, and fiery papri-chhole combo. As winter rolls in, the streets come alive with the aroma of traditional dry sweets like gajak and rewari. So, where can you find these culinary delights? Head to Tripolia Market or the bustling markets near Hope Circus.

A trip north to Neemrana takes you back in time to a 550-year-old marvel – the Neemrana Fort Palace. This majestic structure, now a luxurious hotel, seamlessly blends Rajasthani architectural grandeur with colonial-era influences. Don't miss the nearby Neemrana Baori, one of India's most impressive stepwells, a testament to the region's rich engineering heritage.

Venture northeast and discover the sacred grounds of the Tijara Jain Temple.
